Early this year, I got a call from Barry Mottershead, big wave surfer, long time friend and supporter of all things AE. He told me of the adventure he and Eliz Clyne, his girlfriend and also our long time friend, were plotting. The plan was to paddle the coast of Baja in a pair of sea kayaks towing their surfboards, it sounded stellar. Barry and Eliz are not known to do anything in a by-the-book or tame fashion, and so I knew they were fully committed.
Barry outlined the blueprint for the surfboard trailer, and explained what they would need from AE. We were required to build a sleeve for the nose and tail of the surfboard, providing the harness to which the steel frame built onto the kayak would attached. I got to work designing, and prototyping. After some tweaks and discussions with Eliz and Barry, we had a final design.
A pair of AE Surf/Kayak harnesses were built in our Strandhill workshop, flown to California, and paddle down the coast of Baja. The intrepid pair wisely brought the imitable Peter Clyne to document the expedition. The film he produced, premiered at Shore Shots, is an incredible tribute to the beauty of the mission.
